A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos has gone viral after criticizing President Bola Tinubu's administration over the rising cost of living in Nigeria. In an emotional video, the corps member lamented the high cost of transportation, food, and data, stating that life had become unbearable for many Nigerians ¹.
The corps member, who has been identified as Ushie Rita, claimed that she received calls from NYSC officials shortly after posting the video, telling her to remove it or face repercussions. The officials allegedly threatened her, saying that she would face consequences if she didn't take down the post ².
Rita's video sparked widespread discussions about free speech, government accountability, and the treatment of outspoken youths in Nigeria. Many Nigerians have come out in support of Rita, condemning the NYSC officials for attempting to suppress her freedom of expression ¹.
Activist VeryDarkMan also reacted to the incident, criticizing the NYSC scheme and questioning its relevance in modern Nigeria. He accused officials of possible corruption, implying that funds meant for corps members might have been mismanaged ².
The incident has highlighted the challenges faced by Nigerians in speaking out against the government, and the need for greater accountability and transparency in public institutions.
